Wilkes County, Georgia subpoenas, writ, and proclamation, 1794-1812.

This collection was assembled by the Georgia Historical Society and contains legal documents pertaining to cases from Wilkes County, Georgia. Item 1 is the acknowledgement of a proclamation by Governor George Mathews ordering the state militia to pursue and apprehend Elijah Clarke who had trespassed onto Native American lands and tried to set up his own independent nation, the Trans-Oconee Republic. Item 2 is a Writ of Fieri facias against Robert Carter after he was defeated in his case against Lipham and Moore. The writ entitled the sheriff to sell Carter's property until the balance owed, £21-7s-10d (21 pounds, 7 shillings, 10 pence) plus court costs of £2-17s-9d (2 pounds, 17 shillings, 9 pence), was paid in full. Item 3 is a summons for John Connor (defendant) to appear in Inferior court on the first Tuesday in October 1795, to give testimony in the case of William Layne v John Connor. Conner faced charges of assault and battery. Item 4 is also a subpoena for Henry Holtzclaw's appearance in court on March 4, 1812, in the case of James Montfort v Timothy Holtzclaw.
